Honest answer: it depends. But it depends in predictable ways. Here's the timeline you should actually expect, based on hundreds of UK local SEO campaigns we've run at SEOBurf.
Week 1: Submission and verification
Mostly mechanical. CitationHQ (or whoever's running your build) submits your business to each directory in turn. What happens next depends on the directory:
- Auto-published (most low-tier directories). Listing goes live within hours. Google won't crawl it for a few days though.
- Email-verified. Verification email arrives, you click, listing goes live within 24 hours.

- Postal-verified (Yell, Bing Places, Apple Maps). Postcard arrives in 7-14 working days. Once you verify, the listing becomes authoritative.
By end of week 1, expect roughly 60-70% of your campaign to be live. The remainder are pending postal verification.
Weeks 2-4: Indexing
Google crawls each directory on its own schedule. High-authority directories like Yell get crawled multiple times a day. Smaller directories might be crawled weekly or monthly.

Weeks 4-8: First ranking movement

What typically moves first:

- Branded plus location queries. "[your business name] [city]"
- Local pack visibility for less-competitive variations of your primary search terms
What typically doesn't move yet:
- Head terms like "plumber London" or "dentist Manchester"
- Highly-competitive industry terms in major cities
The lift here is modest but real. We typically see 1-3 position gains in the local pack for businesses that previously ranked 4-10. For businesses that didn't rank at all, this is when first-page appearance starts.
Months 2-3: The compounding effect
This is where citations earn their reputation as a foundational ranking signal. By month 2-3:
- Google has fully integrated your new citation profile into its local algorithm
- The trust signal compounds. More consistent citations equals higher baseline confidence in all your listings.
- Map pack rankings stabilise at a higher position than pre-campaign
- Direct enquiries from directory listings start arriving (especially Bark.com, Checkatrade, and review-led directories)
The single most important thing in this window: don't stop. Many businesses run a citation campaign, see the month-2 lift, and assume the work is done. It isn't. The compounding effect requires the citations to stay accurate. If your phone number changes and you don't push the update across all listings, the trust signal degrades fast.
Months 3-6: Full impact
By month 6, the full impact of a citation campaign is visible:
- Local pack rankings at their new sustained level. Typically 3-5 positions higher than pre-campaign for businesses with previously weak profiles.
- Map searches showing your business consistently for relevant local intent
- Branded SERP results showing rich Knowledge Panel data pulled from your verified directories
- Voice search ("plumber near me") returning your business for qualified queries
This is also when you should run your first audit. Citations drift. Directories occasionally lose data. Some get acquired and rebrand. A 6-month audit catches issues before they degrade rankings.
What affects the timeline
A few things meaningfully change how fast citations move rankings.
Pre-existing citation profile
A business with zero existing citations sees the biggest lift. But it also takes longer to see it. Google has to build the entity profile from scratch.
A business with 30+ existing citations but inconsistent NAP sees faster movement once consistency is achieved. Google already trusts the entity exists. It just needs the data to clean up.
A business with 50+ existing consistent citations sees marginal movement from adding more. They're already at the citation-driven ranking ceiling.
Industry competition
Less-competitive verticals (chiropractors, personal trainers) see ranking lift faster than highly-competitive ones (legal, dental, plumbing in major UK cities). Same mechanism. Different saturation.
City competitiveness
A new business in Bristol sees faster local-pack movement from a fresh citation profile than the same business in central London. London's competition is tighter. The marginal trust gained from citations needs to overcome more competitor signal.
