Bing Places is the most-skipped high-authority citation in UK local SEO. Domain Rating 96, free, owned by Microsoft, feeds Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and increasingly Microsoft Copilot, and most UK business owners have never claimed their listing.

Why Bing Places matters more than people think

Bing's UK market share sits around 6-8% in 2026, small but not zero. What matters more is who uses Bing: Edge is the default browser on every Windows install, which means almost every corporate desktop in the UK defaults to Bing search. For B2B services in particular, that's a meaningful share of decision-maker traffic.

But the bigger reason to claim Bing Places isn't Bing search, it's the secondary distribution. Bing Places listings feed:

  • Microsoft Copilot, the AI search increasingly used by Windows users
  • DuckDuckGo local results
  • Yahoo Search (still relevant for older demographics)
  • Apple Maps (in some regions, via Microsoft's data partnership)
  • Cortana voice search

Add it up and Bing Places listings reach roughly 25-35% of UK search traffic depending on the vertical.

The fast setup, import from Google

Bing Places has a one-click import from Google Business Profile. Authorise once, your existing GBP data populates Bing Places automatically. Verify, done.

This is the right approach for 95% of UK businesses. The exceptions:

  • Businesses with a deliberately different positioning between Google and Bing audiences (rare)
  • Businesses that want to test different photos, descriptions, or categories (unusual but legitimate)

For everyone else: import from Google, verify, move on.

Bing's verification quirks

Bing verifies by phone, email, or post. Phone is fastest (1-3 days). Post takes 2-3 weeks. Don't skip verification, unverified Bing listings still appear but carry far less ranking weight, and Microsoft Copilot deprioritises them aggressively.

If you've imported from Google and Google was already postal-verified, Bing typically inherits the verification status. If not, plan for the 2-3 week postcard wait.

What to add beyond the import

Once imported, three things are worth doing manually:

  • Upload Bing-specific photos, landscape orientation, 1280x720 or larger, focus on the storefront/team rather than products
  • Fill the long-form business description. Bing allows up to 750 characters, use them
  • Add services as individual items. Bing's services field is more structured than Google's, and Microsoft Copilot picks up specific services for AI-generated answers
