The UK local SEO checklist for 2026

A practical, do-it-this-week checklist for UK business owners who want to rank in Google Maps and the local pack — from NAP to citations to reviews.

Local SEO has not fundamentally changed in the last few years — but the execution has. Here is the checklist we use at CitationHQ and SEOBurf when taking on a new UK local client in 2026.

1. Lock down your NAP

Pick one canonical business name, address and phone number format and stick to it forever. Write it down. Share it with whoever updates your listings. Never deviate.

2. Claim Google Business Profile

The single highest-leverage hour you will spend. Claim it, verify it, fill out every field, upload 10+ photos, pick accurate categories, and request reviews. If you do nothing else on this list, do this.

3. Build citations on 40+ UK directories

Aim for 40–60 listings on trusted UK directories, starting with:

  • Yell
  • Yelp UK
  • Thomson Local
  • Bing Places
  • Apple Maps
  • Bark.com
  • 118.com
  • UK Small Business Directory

4. Audit for NAP inconsistencies

Run an audit (BrightLocal, Whitespark, or a manual Google search) and fix any conflicting listings. The top directories first — they have the biggest impact.

5. Build a reviews system

Set up a simple process: after every job, send a text or email with a direct link to your Google review page. Target 10+ new reviews per quarter.

6. Add local schema markup

Implement LocalBusiness schema on your website. It helps Google understand your business details and is a quick technical win.

7. Publish 1 location-focused page per service

If you offer multiple services or cover multiple areas, create a dedicated page for each. Generic pages do not rank locally.

8. Track your map pack rankings monthly

Use a rank tracker (Local Falcon, BrightLocal Grid) to see exactly where you appear in the map pack by location. Track monthly so you can spot drops early.
