Yell for UK local SEO
Yell is the UK's largest online business directory with over 25M monthly visits. DR 82. Free to list. Every CitationHQ plan includes Yell.
Yell is the single most important business directory in the UK. If you only build one citation, build this one, and build it properly.
Why Yell still matters in 2026
Yell has been around since 1966 (under one name or another). Most UK adults over 30 have used it at some point, and despite the decline of print, the .com side has held its position as the default UK business directory for both consumers and Google's local algorithm. Domain Rating sits at 82, crawl frequency is high, and listings appear in Google's Knowledge Panel for branded business searches across most of the country.
The single thing to understand about Yell is this: Google trusts it more than almost any other UK directory. When Google's local algorithm cross-references your business across the web to verify you exist, Yell is one of the first sources it checks. A Yell listing that matches your Google Business Profile and your other citations is a strong positive signal. A Yell listing that contradicts the rest, wrong phone, old address, is a strong negative one.
The single biggest mistake we see on Yell
Far and away the most common Yell mistake we audit at SEOBurf is a listing claimed years ago and then forgotten. The business has moved, changed phone, rebranded, but the Yell entry is the version from three years ago. Google sees the conflict, downgrades trust, and rankings quietly slip.
The second-most common mistake: using a different version of the business name on Yell than on Google Business Profile. "Smith Plumbing" on Google, "Smith Plumbing Ltd" on Yell, "J. Smith Plumbing & Heating" on the company website. Even small variations confuse Google's entity matcher.
Pick one canonical name. Use it everywhere.
What a genuinely good Yell listing looks like
- Business name matches Companies House and Google Business Profile exactly, including suffix, punctuation, and capitalisation
- Primary category is the most specific match, not "Plumber" if you could be "Emergency Plumber" or "Heating Engineer"
- 2-3 secondary categories. Yell allows them, use them, but only for services you actually offer
- Phone number in the canonical UK format you use everywhere else
- Postcode in the standard
XX1 1XXformat, single space, all caps - Opening hours filled in completely, including bank-holiday exceptions if you set them
- 6-10 photos minimum, listings with photos rank meaningfully higher in Yell's internal search and in Google's local pack
Skip the paid placements unless you've already nailed the basics, the free listing carries 90% of the SEO benefit.
How verification actually works
Yell verification is by phone or post. Phone is faster (a code is read out, you enter it on the site). Post takes 7-14 working days for a postcard with a code. Don't skip this, an unverified listing is effectively dead in Google's eyes.
If you've inherited a Yell listing for an old address, the verification process for the new address is straightforward: claim, verify the new address, then submit a removal request for the old listing through Yell support. The old listing won't disappear immediately, it usually drops out of Yell's index within 30-60 days.
Yell categories worth knowing
Yell's category tree runs three levels deep. Most businesses pick the top-level category and stop. That's a missed opportunity, the deeper the category match, the higher you rank within the directory itself. Browse the full tree before choosing, and check what your top three local competitors have selected.
