What is a business citation?

A business citation is any place on the internet where your business name, address and phone number appear together. Think Yell, Thomson Local, Yelp, Bark.com — and dozens more. For UK local businesses, citations are a foundational local SEO signal.

Why do citations matter?

Google uses citations to verify that your business is real and where it says it is. The more consistent citations you have across trusted directories, the more confident Google becomes — and the higher it ranks you in local search results.

Citations are effectively votes of confirmation from independent sources. When 55 trusted UK directories all agree on your business name, address and phone number, Google treats that as strong evidence your business is legitimate and established.

What makes a good citation?

A good citation:

• Appears on a trusted, high-authority directory (DR 40+ ideally)
• Contains your exact business name, address and phone number — matching every other citation perfectly
• Ideally includes your website URL and a link back to your site
• Is placed in the correct category (e.g. "Plumber" not "Home services")
• Has passed verification (postcard, phone, email) where required

How many citations do I need?

For most local businesses in the UK, being listed on 40 to 60 core directories gives strong coverage. The quality of the directory matters more than volume — a listing on Yell (DR 82) is worth more than ten listings on unknown sites.
